Some Chinese New Year Games:

1) Chopsticks

Each child will need a pair of chopsticks, and each team will need two bowls and a number of small objects such as: marbles, maltesers, smartees, or marshmallows.

Place the bowls on tables that are a few feet apart. Put the objects in one of the bowls. When you call “start”, each child must pick up one of there objects, using only the chopsticks, and carry it to the empty bowl. Then returns for the next object, and so on until all the objects are safely across. First team to finish wins.

Hands must not be used at any time! If an object is dropped, it must be picked up and put back in the first bowl. You are only allowed to move one object at a time. You can make this game easier by varying the objects. Marbles are hardest, marshmallows are easiest!

2) Catch the Dragon’s Tail:

You will need a large group of children – at least 10, but the more the merrier! The children all form a line with their hands on the shoulders of the child in front. The first in line is the dragon’s head, the last in line is the dragon’s tail.  The dragon’s head then tries to catch the tail by maneuvering the line around so that he can tag the last player. All the players in the middle do their best to hinder the dragon’s head. Don’t let the line break!

When the head catches the tail, the tail player takes the front position and becomes the new dragon’s head. All the other players move back one position.

3) Cat and Mouse Parachute Game:

Pick a cat and mouse.  The mouse goes under the parachute and the cat goes on top of the parachute and sits in the middle with their hands over their eyes.  The rest of the kids make waves and when you tell the cat to open their eyes, they must crawl around (important to make sure they crawl to avoid injury!!) trying to tag the mouse.  When a mouse is tagged, the game ends and you play again.  You can always pick more than one cat and mouse at a time.

4) The Eagle and the Chicks Game:

An active game of tag, one child is the Eagle, whose goal is to tag the chicks. One child is the Mother Hen, who is immune to being tagged and who tries to protect the chicks. All the other children are chicks. The object of the game is for the Eagle to get around the Mother Hen and tag a chick, who will become the Eagle in the next game.
