We all enjoy a piece of the Irish traditions on St. Patrick’s Day! Here’s a few ideas to make the day fun for the leprechauns in your family!
Green Fun foods:
Make your favourite cupcake recipe or bake Shamrock shaped sugar cookies and have everyone decorate with green icing, sprinkles & Shamrock shape candies.
Peppermint Candy Shake:
2. ½ cups vanilla ice cream
¼ cup milk
½ cup Peppermint Pattie bars or Junior Mints cut into pieces
Place candy pieces into the freezer for 15 minutes. Combine all ingredients in the blender & blend on medium speed for 30 seconds. Stir with a spoon & blend for 30 more seconds. Repeat until desired consistency is reached. For a thicker milkshake, place into freezer for a few minutes. Top with whipped cream & sprinkle some of the mint candy over top. ENJOY!
Work off your extra energy with some of these fun games:
Irish Hot Potato:
Sit the children in a circle. Hand one child the potato. When the music starts (playing some Celtic music really makes this Irish) pass the potato to the person on their right. When the music stops, whoever is holding the potato moves out of the circle & play resumes. The last person with the potato is the winner – some gold chocolate coins make a great prize!
Pot of Gold Toss:
Many stores will sell Pots for this game, or use your own pail or bucket – have the children even decorate it with Shamrock & Leprechaun stickers bought at the dollar store. Use bean bags or play money coins to toss. Have each child toss the bean bag or coin into the pot – get 3 in a row, they win!
Other fun games can include a treasure hunt. Go hunting around the house or yard for all things green, gold coins, find Shamrocks or leprechauns (found at the dollar store)
Wind down with a craft or two.
Shamrock Foam shapes:
Using a Shamrock shaped cookie cutter trace the shape onto green foam. Cut out the shape, glue a green pipecleaner for the stem (cut to desired length) and glue a green button or pom pom in the centre to finish off your Shamrock. You can also place a self adhesive magnet strip on the back to place on fridge!
Felt Leprechaun Hats:
Cut a basic hat shape from a piece of green felt. Cut a strip of black to fit across the hat for the rim. Cut a yellow felt square and a black felt square, the black one should be smaller than the yellow. Glue the black strip to the hat for the rim. Glue the yellow square to the black strip and the black square on top of the yellow square to make a buckle. Glue shamrock button or green tri-bead to the upper right corner of the hat. Glue a pin back or magnet to the back of the hat.
To really go all out call your local Par-T-Perfect to have some face painting, balloon animals and a bouncy castle as part of the fun!
