Top 10 Tips for Beating Stress this Holiday Season (part 2)

5. Stop Striving to be Pinterest Perfect

There is something about this time of year that makes me want to just snap my fingers and turn into June Cleaver. Like many people, I have a little bit of a Pinterest addiction, and have filled my boards with recipes, decorations and wrapping ideas that would look perfect in my home this Christmas. But that’s the thing about Pinterest: it’s full of great ideas that never seem to turn out the way we expect. During the holidays we tend to create an image in our minds of an idyllic Christmas complete with a 5 star meal and decorations worthy of an appearance on Martha Stewart. In reality, time, life and let’s face it, usually skill, tend to get in the way of reaching the picturesque day we’ve dreamed of. That can be very disappointing and send your already building stress level through the roof! This year, keep things simple. Time with family is supposed to be what counts. They’ll still love us anyway!

4. Get Some Sun

Even if you’re not lucky enough to be whisked away on a sunny holiday, your body and mind need a little sunshine in the gloomy, grey days of winter. Vitamin D is great way to destroy those winter blues. Here in the Lower Rain-land it can be tough to find a sunny day, so make sure to enjoy the ones that do pop up! Your local tanning salon can also be a great option for some vitamin D, even if you’re not looking for a tan. So grab your eye protection and find yourself 10 minutes. If you’re lucky enough to relax you might even find a few minutes of nap time!

3. Find Some Alone Time

I know. It sounds impossible, but some quality alone time is one of the best ways to beat stress and start feeling more like your usual self. I’m not talking about a trip to the mall, watching TV or driving to work. Take up yoga, explore meditation, paint a picture or write a poem, even if you have to lock yourself in the bathroom to make it happen. Remove yourself from the rest of your life for just a few minutes a day and you’ll start to notice a change. Give it a try; it won’t hurt!

2. Don’t Ditch Your Workout Routine

Exercise is the best stress release! Whether it is yoga and relaxation, a groovy dance class, a brisk walk to start your day, or hitting the gym to get your body going, whatever exercise works for you, it make you feel better on multiple levels. Human bodies are designed to move, so get moving! You’ll start feeling better, body and mind. With everything that is going on during the holidays, it’s easy to skip out on the great habits you’ve been cultivating during the rest of the year. If today’s the day you would normally hit the gym, don’t let your holiday to do list get in the way. Accept no excuses! If you maintain your routine you’ll feel better and accomplish more.

1. Delegate

“So much to do, so little time”. If this sounds like you lately, then this is the tip for you! Christmastime is all about spending time with the people you love, so don’t exclude them from the preparations! Sure, it feels nice to accomplish things on your own and have them done the way you planned, but if you can let go of some of the control, you can let go of the stress too. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from strangers as well. Many stores, especially locally owned businesses, are happy to help you find the perfect gift. Don’t forget to take advantage of those convenient wrapping centers at the mall too! If you open yourself up to accepting help this holiday season, you’ll be sure to find it.
