Games Leadership: Tips & Tricks from the Pros pt.1

Just the idea of leading games for a group of kids is enough to make most people nervous. There are a lot of factors to consider: what games will they enjoy? Are they age appropriate? Do we have enough space and the right supplies? What if the kids aren’t interested, and heaven forbid, what if they don’t have fun?!

With the right setup and the right attitude games leadership can be a breeze.

Great Games Leadership:

It’s no secret that kids love to play, but organizing a structured games portion of a party can be challenging. As a leader, the number 1 thing to remember is that if you’re having fun the kids will too. Likewise, if you’re not bringing any enthusiasm the kids won’t either.

Being a great games leader is all about being large and in charge! From the first moment you need to establish the fun but organized atmosphere that your games will need. Begin by telling the kids that it’s time for games, not asking if they want to play games. Some kids may be hesitant or uninterested in joining, so it’s your job to convince everyone that this is going to be a whole lot of fun! Put on your biggest grin, get excited and let everyone know that the party is here and it’s going to be a blast!

Once you’ve gathered the kids together, you need to make sure everyone understands what games are being played and what the rules are. If you’re playing multiple games explain them one at a time to avoid confusion. Make sure the kids are listening! Our staff love to use the old “put your hands on your head if you can hear me” trick to make sure that they have everyone’s attention before explaining the rules.

Get to know who’s who. Knowing the kids’ names can help get their attention and keep things moving along. Make sure that each child has a turn to be “it” and that the birthday child gets the first turn.

The enthusiasm you used to gather the kids together doesn’t stop once the games start. The children will take their cues from you, so if you’re visibly excited and cheering them on, they will too. But if you’re bored with the games, guess who else is too. Keep your energy up and don’t let that smile drop!
